i don't want to be seen as a pretty thing;
it's the pretty things we're always breaking

samurai champloo

andy and i watched through this series in a day, bringing back fond memories of the summer of 2003, when we powered through cowboy bebop (by the same director as this series), and trigun.

the adult swim site for this movie has a mini-game that invites you to “walk a mile in mugen’s shoes. his wooden, ass-kicking shoes.” i found that amusing.

the island

sci-fi goes hollywood. it’s like a hip logan’s run. not as good as, say, the minority report, but not all bad, either. for extra fun, watch through it with bay’s commentary on for some self-important-prick enjoyment.

sadly, there is no line in this movie even half as good as logan’s run’s “kicker.”

saw ii

silly horror flick. the worst thing about it is the cover, actually.

dirty pretty things

in recent tv news

lots of olympic watching was done over the past few weeks. i liked snowboarding, especially the snowboard cross. lea liked short track speed skating. i will now summarize the olympics. the best thing about the olympics: an american named ’seth’ won a gold metal. the worst thing about the olympics: dick button.

the new line of mcdonalds commercials for their premium coffee, in which people wake up to their lives, has a sufficiently dark enough undertone that i find them quite enjoyable. i loathe most mcdonalds commercials, including the still-running “add a little spice to your life” line.

trip-hop is still well liked by the people who pick songs for tv ads. the new victoria’s secret spot sports a portishead song, and some other commercial is playing hooverphonic’s “this strange effect.” it’s only a matter of time before somebody is gutsy enough to run something like tricky’s “christiansands,” which has a very cool sound to it.

shane, on survivor, is bat-shit crazy.

40 year old virgin

i saw this in the theater as well seeing it now on dvd, but apparently didn’t write it up then. it’s a pretty good comedy. there’s not really much else to say about it.
