i don't want to be seen as a pretty thing;
it's the pretty things we're always breaking

total recall

thoroughly hilarious. philip k. dick has certainly inspired a long line of auspicious movies. i find it especially interesting that minority report was originally optioned as “total recall 2: the minority report.” one can only imagine the hamfisted explosion-filled turn the movie would have taken with the governator at the helm.

blade: trinity

dude, it’s blade 3.

dead rabbits and dumbasses

actually, one of each. there’s half of a rabbit a few feet away from the sidewalk on the way in to work. i first noticed it a few days ago, while the mowers were doing their thing; at that point, it was probably freshly halved. there was a startling lack of blood in the whole situation; lea pointed out that it might have been dead when it took its little merry-go-round ride.

as for the other half of the title of this post, i locked my keys in my car today for the first time ever, which was a pretty sweet 4 second lapse of common sense that cost me $40 dollars and a smidgen of self esteem. ah well. as far as mistakes involving cars go, $40 is actually a pretty cheap one, and i’m sure i’ll be able to drum up some more self esteem somewhere. on the bright side, the next time i lock my keys in my car and i have access to a wedge and a metal coat hanger, i know how to get them out myself. sadly, i didn’t have access to either of these things at the post office, where the incident occurred.

troy

this movie didn’t strike me as being as bad as the critics seemed to think it was. then again, i was playing a computer game throughout the duration of this, so perhaps i just paid attention to the parts i liked.

on an unrelated note, the director of this movie is slated to direct a movie based on the book “ender’s game,” which is awesome.

primer

to talk about movies like this one is difficult, since the less you know about it going in, the better it is, in my mind. suffice it to say that you probably didn’t see this movie when it came out, but it is well worth your while to rent this if you like “cerebral” films.

finding neverland

we missed this one when it came out, despite all the corresponding oscar buzz. touching and well done.

the phantom of the opera

i prefer the recording of this i got in eighth grade when all my buddies inexplicably became obsessed with this musical. granted, this is a movie and that is a recording, and they can’t rightfully be compared to each other, but i think i prefer the recording anyway.

brewery tour

today we took a tour of capital, a local regional/micro brewery. the walk around the premises was pretty interesting, and then we got a taste test of about 10 different beers of theirs. there’s nothing quite like sitting around a beer garden on a saturday afternoon “testing” shots of beer.

la boheme

lea and i went to see the opera. a coworker of hers was looking to punt tickets due to last minute scheduling conflicts, and we, being the adventurous types that we are, took them off his hands. one trip to milwaukee later, and we can now say we have seen an opera. one can wax rhapsodic about (high) culture and refinement and what have you, but what it comes down to is that you like some things, and dislike others. this particular experience rates about a 5/10 for me. it was interesting and fun in that it was novel, certainly, but it didn’t do much for me beyond that. perhaps i’m not refined enough. after the opera we hit up a brewpub a block away for dinner, and received the worst service we’ve had in recent memory. so, basically, screw you, milwaukee.
