joe simpson
granted, i’d already seen the movie, and because the movie is quite faithful to the book, there wasn’t really anything “new” in this book that i hadn’t already seen. despite that fact, i tore through this book in two days. simpson’s story is amazing, and he tells it well. this book, and the movie based on it, are highly recommended to anyone who enjoys this sort of real-life thriller.

this is an interesting book, and i think it’s safe to say that if you liked guns, germs and steel, you’ll like this one as well. it’s a nice piece of nonfiction that tells a little history and makes you think about the environment in the process.
as a side note, take a look at the review on amazon for this by cheryl merrill. i particularly like the paragraph beginning with “I understand why Christian fundamentalists want to destroy earth…”
city of god
i finally got around to watching this, a pretty-good if not great foreign film about a few members of a street gang in rio de janeiro. i was expecting more gore/violence based on reviews by dave and jody from back in the day (not that i missed the violence, i had just put off watching this because of the promise of said violence).
