i don't want to be seen as a pretty thing;
it's the pretty things we're always breaking

cold snap

so, it’s cold. yesterday morning it was -6 (degrees fahrenheit) when i came into work; this morning, -11. wind chill is in the neighborhood of -30. now, i’m no stranger to cold weather, having walked to school on many a wintry minnesotan morning, but it’s really obnoxious when the cd player in your car skips because it’s so damn cold. at least the car still starts.

peanut sesame noodles

YUCK. i didn’t have exactly the ingredients the recipe called for, so i made a few substitutions, but nothing extreme, or even daring. the noodles were way too sesame oil-y. this is the first thing i’ve made here in madison that i flat out disliked. (joy of cooking)

vichyssoise

it’s fun to say. it’s easy to make. it’s tasty. everybody wins. (joy of cooking)

the chronicles of amber

it may not be high literature, but it’s fun to read.

the italian job

fun to watch, and a nice change from the sturm and drang oscar contenders we’ve been watching lately. also an interesting juxtaposition from monster’s charlize theron (which we watched earlier in the day) to the italian job’s charlize theron.

monster

ebert proclaimed this the greatest acting job since ever in the history of cinema. i don’t know that i thought it was quite that good, but it was still worth seeing.

basic strata

aka an egg bake. mmm, brunch. (joy of cooking 140ish)

pad thai

i thought i’d take a risk and try to make some pad thai, minus the shrimp. overall, i would qualify this dish as a minor cooking catastrophe, but the end result, after all the toil and irritations was a tasty noodle dish (even though it didn’t taste at all like pad thai). all in all, i probably won’t make it again, just because it was such a pain to make. (joy of cooking)

satellite rides

i may have missed the old 97’s show this past weekend, but i went out and purchased myself this disc with the money i would have spent on the concert. this is a great cd, full of good songs, with nary a bum track, and many greats, e.g. my longtime favorite, the slow singer-songwriteresque “question.”

kristian bjornard

y’all should go visit kristian bjornard’s homepage. he just redid it, and it’s pretty. i reckon a number of you don’t know kristian, but the page is pretty all the same. plus, there are a bunch of pictures of me on it, and you know me, don’t you? hmm. somehow, i feel like this ends up making me look narcissistic. really, i’m not.
