i don't want to be seen as a pretty thing;
it's the pretty things we're always breaking
nosferatu
a nice little movie for halloween. this is a silent movie, and has an accompanying soundtrack; much to our horror, the dvd we were watching did not possess a kooky organ soundtrack, but rather a subpar orchestral “modern” music philip glass-y drone. we watched the first half of the movie with that until we realized that the original organ score was on the dvd, on another audio track. ah, technology.
halloween
someone told me that stars will fall only when i’m not looking
i’m not looking for anything tonight
the shape of these hands that used to hold
grown over and wild
whispered nonsense
underneath the leaves like a child in a pile
i would burn and heave
sending ash into the eaves
strip the paint with pounding rain
here i’ll make my home again and again
see those searchlights
they’ll never find a better life
watch those taillights
lend their red into my eyes
i won’t break this fall
acting like a voodoo doll
every move i don’t intend
here i’ll make my home again and again
someone told me that you came home last halloween
could it be you have a mask i haven’t seen?
into the wild
jon krakauer
why not read another krakauer? i enjoyed the first two, and this one as well, to a large extent. i’d have to say that i enjoyed into thin air and under the banner of heaven more than this one, but this was still worth a read. one of the nicest parts of reading short books is that you can read lots of them.
the fellowship of the ring
j.r.r. tolkien
i listened to this on tape (well, cd) in the car during my drives to and from northfield the past two weekends. it’s been years since i read these books, and i can think of few books with which to better pass the long drive to northfield.
the almost freezing rain
how the year has turned. last week, warm (or at least warmish) and bright; this week, as i leave work i walk from the chill flourescence of westgate mall into dark and rain. the droplets of rain plink off my windshield, frozen on their way down. when i walked the trash out later tonight, i found that the rain remained unfrozen, the world caught in the strange limbo that late octoboer / early november brings.
note the splendid forecast.
three colors: red
last of the three colors films. i’m not quite sure which i liked best - they certainly all had their moments. i liked the end.
oryx and crake
margaret atwood
atwood writes about the future again, though this time the topic is a genetic dystopia, rather than a sexual one. and again, though it is not quite science fiction, it has some of that feel to it.
civic duty
how i love my 88 civic hatchback. sadly, one of the front brake pads wore out enough to warrant a replacing, and not willing to take my life into my own hands, i took it to a mechanic. given the unfortunate reality that some pieces of most cars break just a little bit, over time, this wasn’t that bad a deal. i have reckoned the total money i have put in to this little beast starting with its purchase to clock in a bit under $2K. that includes purchasing price, plates and registration, insurance, repairs, and gasoline. even cheap cars get expensive, i guess, but i am happy that this one has been less expensive than more.
amadeus
another movie i’ve never seen straight through, though mozart’s obnoxious laugh precedes it/him. due partially to the wonders of double sided dvds and partially to my own stupidity, i cleverly managed to watch the second side of the dvd (the last 54 minutes) before watching the front (the first 103). the second side made a lot more sense once i was done with the first.
blue man group
performance art? what the hell is that, anyway? well, turns out it’s a hopped up percussion heavy rock concert with neat lights. ’twas fun. the opening bands were tracy bonham (you may remember “mother mother,” her mid 90s angry/bad girl radio rant), and venus hum, who is best classified as a sort of ameri-bjork.
